AYER KEROH:
PKR president Anwar Ibrahim reminded party leaders and members that tycoons are not with them and that the party owes its strength to the support of the people.

In his opening address at the PKR National Congress at the Melaka International Trade Centre, Anwar said that no leader should think that politics was “chess of the elite”.

“Now that we have reformasi and Pakatan Harapan, we have to make sure that in the next five to 10 years, PH looks after the welfare of the people better than before.

“We do not measure (our achievements) based on how many MPs and how many senators we have,” he said.

He reminded members that his infamous battle cry of “Lawan Tetap Lawan” (Keep fighting) remained relevant even when they are in power, but that they should not fight their friends.

“We are a team, we say ‘lawan tetap lawan’, but that ‘lawan’ should not be with ‘kawan’ (friends),” he said in an apparent reference to the series of brawls at yesterday’s PKR Youth congress.

On a separate matter, Anwar said there was a need to support and defend civil servants as most of them were positive and only a few continued to work with the “old system”.

He also acknowledged that there were concerns among police officers on the proposed Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission and said he would ask the government to restudy the IPCMC 2019 bill.

On Dec 3, the debate on the bill was postponed for a second time to the next Dewan Rakyat sitting in March.

De facto law minister Liew Vui Keong had said the postponement was due to the need for further discussions with relevant stakeholders, especially the police.
