Sackings nothing to do with Anwar-Azmin rift, says Pahang PKR chief

Fuziah Salleh says the sacking of two members over allegations of graft during the party’s elections last year is a clear signal that the party is serious in its fight against corruption.

KOTA KINABALU:
Pahang PKR chief Fuziah Salleh has rejected the notion that the recent sackings of members from the party signified the widening of cracks within the party, saying the dismissals were made in a proper manner.

Fuziah said in the case of central leadership council member (MPP) and Bera PKR division leader Zakaria Abdul Hamid and Pahang ordinary member Ismail Dulhadi, the decision to sack them was only made after much deliberation.

She said it had nothing to do with the so-called rift between president Anwar Ibrahim and his deputy, Mohamed Azmin Ali.

“PKR received a letter from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) notifying they are under probe.

“The MACC later admitted it was a mistake to send the letter to the party. The process may be wrong but not the contents (of the letter).

“As a party serious in its stand against graft, we deliberated at length over the matter. I was also at the meeting. Eventually, the disciplinary bureau took firm action, which was accepted by the MPP,” Fuziah said here today.

She said the sacking was a clear signal to its leaders and members that the party will stick to its principles in the fight against corruption.

“We know there would be a backlash but we felt we had a responsibility to the people and our members to show our stand that we will not compromise on such issues.

“This has nothing to do with any individual or anything personal. Zakaria is a very nice person and somewhat close to me but, at the end of the day, what is wrong is wrong.”

PKR disciplinary board chairman Ahmad Kassim had said MACC had written to the party on Oct 23 about the alleged misconduct during last year’s party elections, while the party’s communications director, Fahmi Fadzil, said MACC had advised the party to look into the matter and take the necessary disciplinary action.

Zakaria said he had not been informed about any report lodged against him with the disciplinary board and accused the party of having taken action without hearing his defence.

On Zakaria claiming he is still a party member as he has yet to receive a termination letter from the party, Fuziah said she will leave it to the disciplinary board to settle the matter.

Meanwhile, she also deemed the sacking of Mizan Adli Mohd Noor as the party’s youth wing permanent chairman and his deputy, Mohd Ramly Ahmad, as just “a cleaning-up process”.

“Actually, for us senior party leaders, I would say we’ve been through a lot as part of this cleansing process — this is just one of it,” she said.

It was reported that the PKR national youth had sent out letters to sack Mizan and Ramly, just days before the National Youth Convention.

In a letter dated Nov 27, it was stated that the party would be terminating their positions as they are aged above 35 and because they had received more votes than the number of delegates who showed up at last year’s PKR Youth National Convention.

The letter was signed by PKR Youth national secretary Ahmad Syukri Che Ab Razak.

Mizan and Ramly had countered that it was ridiculous to question their positions and votes one year after the last convention and just days before the next one due on Dec 6.
