He told the Dewan Rakyat today that the government would make the final decision.
“But if we go ahead with it, we will ensure that the company fulfils the requirements in the contract,” he said to Fahmi Fadzil (PH-Lembah Pantai), who had asked about the status of the six MD530G light scout helicopters.
In May, FMT reported a deal by the previous administration to buy the helicopters manufactured by MD Helicopters of the US.
Sources disclosed that a local company had been appointed as the agent for the purchase before its dealership rights were said to have been terminated by MD Helicopters.
Under the deal, which saw the previous administration paying RM112.65 million in advance, the helicopters were to be delivered in two batches – two in July 2017 and the remaining four in December 2018.
The defence ministry later lodged a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission over the non-delivery of the helicopters.
Last month, Mohamad said the government might go to court if the helicopters, worth a little over RM300 million, are not delivered.
He also said if the helicopters are delivered and the Armed Forces refuse to use them, discussions will be held with other ministries on how they can be utilised.
On a related matter, Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, said the Cabinet would also decide on the action to be taken against those involved in the purchase of the helicopters once it has decided whether or not to cancel the purchase.
