KUALA LUMPUR:
Human Resources Minister M Kula Segaran says retirement age will remain at 60 despite calls for it to be increased by another five years.

He said there was no reason for an extension as companies could still re-employ those over the age of 60.

“A lot of factors need to be looked into,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat today.

“Any changes in retirement age may also have an impact on youths who are looking for a job.”

He added that the youth unemployment rate remains high at 10.9%.

He also spoke of health factors for those above the age of 60 which he said could impact productivity.

He was responding to Rusnah Aluai (PH-Tangga Batu), who asked if Putrajaya would increase the retirement age to 65.

To another question, he said some 14% of present jobs might disappear in the next 20 to 25 years due to the Industrial Revolution 4.0, based on a report by the International Labour Organisation.

He said these jobs would likely be replaced by other jobs related to e-commerce and digitalisation.

He said this could be seen in e-commerce platforms like Alibaba and Lazada, where many logistics-related jobs are being offered.
