PETALING JAYA:
The prime minister took to social media today, advising leaders and youths to keep away from “wrong things” and to stay motivated, and hinting that he will retire “when most of the problems in the country are at a stage that can be settled”.

In a 2.45-minute video uploaded on his Chedet Official YouTube channel, Dr Mahathir Mohamad answered several questions by the people.

The first question was on his advice to youths seeking to be a leader like him.

“Leaders must be able to face challenges, be capable of solving problems and have support from the rakyat,” Mahathir said, adding that they must love the country more than themselves.

This is because, he said, they would only succeed if the country is successful.

Mahathir told the people to stop “wrongdoings like selling off licences, contracts and approved permits”.

“This cannot go on because if we do that, what is given will be cancelled.”

To a question on how a 94-year-old like him deals with challenges and “negativity” in his life, Mahathir said he has to remind himself that certain things such as overeating and engaging in “wrong pleasures” are not good for him.

On staying motivated in studies, he said it is crucial to gain as much knowledge as possible as it can be put to good use throughout their lives.

Mahathir also spoke on the culture of being hardworking, stating that “it is all about having good values”.

“We need to have good values if we are to succeed,” he said.

On concerns about a slowdown in the economy, Mahathir said Malaysians should acquire as much knowledge as possible on money matters and manage and handle their businesses well.

Finally, asked what he would like to see before he retires, he said: “I hope that when I retire, most of the problems in the country are at a stage that can be settled.”
