KUCHING:
A man has threatened to ruin the mooncake festival celebration to be held by Sarawak DAP on Sunday night if it is politicised.

The individual had gone to KMC flats on Jalan Ban Hock – the venue of the celebration – yesterday and threatened workers that he would demolish the stage if the celebration was turned into a political event.

Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei said the identity of the man was not known but based on the man’s claims, he believed that there was a political motive behind his act.

He said the organisers had been granted a police permit and received approval by the Kuching City South Council (MBKS).

“We have reported the matter to police and they have sent their personnel to patrol the area.

“This is not the first time that we have received such a threat at the KMC flats. The first time was during the last state election campaign at the same venue,” he told reporters today.

Asked if the threat could be from a supporter of political rival Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), Wong said: “I don’t want to speculate because I respect my political rivals.”

He said the mooncake festival was an important cultural event and all were welcomed to attend.

Food and drinks will be served, followed by Chinese cultural performances.
