Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Hannah Yeoh said this was to encourage preschool operators to get themselves registered to make it easier for Putrajaya to keep tabs on them.
She said as of August this year, there were only 4,744 preschools registered with JKM in Peninsular Malaysia.
“We are supposed to have 40,000 preschools nationwide to cater to students aged below four,” she said at a press conference.
Also present was Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin.
Yeoh said the other requirement needed to be eligible for the discount was to be registered under the commercial tariff category.
Meanwhile, Yeo said the 20% discount will be based on the Incentive-Based Regulation mechanism.
Asked if the discount would be continued in 2021, Yeo said: “We will see.”
Yeo also said she expects more preschools to register now that the government is offering the 20% discount.
