Where’s the RCI on Memali incident, Najib asks Khalid

The former prime minister says Khalid Samad had previously promised one would be established if Pakatan Harapan came to power.

Former prime minister Najib Razak reminds Amanah’s Khalid Samad that PH has been in power for 16 months.
PETALING JAYA:
Najib Razak today questioned the delay in setting up a royal commission of inquiry into the Memali incident, which Amanah’s Khalid Samad had said Pakatan Harapan would do if it won the May 9 polls.

Citing a 2018 report which quoted the Shah Alam MP of promising an RCI should PH win, Najib said the ruling coalition has already been in power for 16 months.

“What are you waiting for?” the former prime minister asked in a Facebook post.

Najib said that Khalid, who is the Federal Territories minister, had raised the Memali issue in a bid to attack the PAS-Umno unity gathering.

Earlier today, Khalid chided PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan for saying that the families of those killed in the Memali incident in Baling, Kedah, more than 30 years ago had forgiven Umno’s mistakes.

He said the newly forged political alliance between PAS and Umno “does not undo the tragedy”.

But Najib said that if Khalid wanted to uncover the truth behind the incident, he should ask Dr Mahathir Mohamad himself, who was in his first stint as the prime minister when the incident occurred in 1985.

“Do you not meet him during the weekly Cabinet meetings?” he asked

The Kampung Memali incident in Baling, Kedah, saw a confrontation between police and supporters of religious teacher Ibrahim Libya, who resisted attempts to arrest him under the Internal Security Act.

The confrontation resulted in the deaths of 18 people, four of them policemen.

The topic cropped up again after Mahathir questioned the cooperation between PAS and Umno, reminding the latter that it was once called “kafir”, or infidel, by the Islamist party.

Umno Youth in return said Mahathir has yet to apologise to PAS over Memali.
