Indonesian with spanner arrested after statues in Ipoh temple desecrated

Suspect was arrested near the temple two hours after the incident early today.

IPOH: Police have detained an Indonesian man on suspicion of intruding into the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Kampung Dusun Bertam here early today.

Perak deputy police chief Lim Hong Shuan said the man was detained after the temple’s management lodged a police report at 1.50am that 15 statues of deities there had been desecrated.

He said based on a tip-off from the public, the man was apprehended at 4.15am by police with the cooperation of local residents.

“Police also seized a spanner believed to have been used by the suspect (to desecrate the statues),” he said in a statement here.

He added that investigations were ongoing and requested members of the public not to speculate on the case.
