SHAH ALAM:
Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari tonight said he still intends to table a bill to allow unilateral conversion of minors to Islam in the state if there is a need to do so.

Speaking to reporters after a dinner with Selangor PKR members, Amirudin said they were still discussing the proposed amendments to fine-tune it.

“But if it is crucial, we will table it at the next sitting.

“We (the state) are still discussing it.”

Earlier today, two DAP leaders, namely party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Selangor DAP chairman Gobind Singh Deo, said the proposed amendment was unconstitutional.

They said the Federal Court had already ruled that the consent of both parents is needed under the Federal Constitution before a minor can be converted.

Four non-Muslim state executive councillors also held an audience earlier today with the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, at Istana Bukit Kayangan to raise this issue, along with other matters.

On the objections raised by Selangor DAP, Amirudin said this was why the state needed time to explain the matter.

The issue, he said, was broad and he claimed that those who had offered their views on the matter did not fully understand it.

“Actually, there is no majority in this matter. It is divided.”

Amirudin also revealed that he had given the mandate to the state assembly speaker to decide on whether to allow the proposed amendment to be tabled.

“We tried to table it towards the end of the last assembly sitting (late last month) but, unfortunately, something happened and there were several motions that could not be tabled.”

This evening, speaker Ng Suee Lim denied he had adjourned the state assembly sitting earlier than scheduled due to his dissatisfaction over the proposed amendment.

Ng said that the bill was never in the order paper to begin with.
