AG presses on for Najib’s apology over Facebook post

Prosecution says the Facebook post on the trial is sub judice and meant to influence the court.

Najib Razak posted an explanation on Facebook about his credit card purchases.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Attorney-General Tommy Thomas has filed a formal application demanding an apology from Najib Razak, accusing the former prime minister of posting on Facebook sub judice comments related to the ongoing SRC International trial.

“This is clearly sub judice,” said deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Izzat Fauzan in an affidavit supporting the application.

“The posting was also intended to garner support from the public to pressure and influence the court.”

The prosecution is seeking a court order to stop Najib from posting similar statements based on evidence presented in the trial.

It said Najib must remove a Facebook post on his credit card spendings as mentioned in the trial.

In the post, Najib said his credit card was used to purchase gifts for a member of the royal family, saying it was a norm to present gifts to foreign dignitaries.

AmBank officer Yeoh Eng Leong had told the court that RM3.9 million of SRC International’s money was used in 2014 and 2015 to settle Najib’s credit card bills.

Najib is facing six charges of money laundering and criminal breach of trust in the transfer of RM42 million to his account from SRC International, a former unit of 1MDB.

He is also accused of abusing his power as prime minister by giving government guarantees on SRC International’s RM4 billion loan from Retirement Fund Inc.
