PETALING JAYA:
Several Pakatan Harapan (PH) Youth leaders today urged the government to release Wan Ji Wan Hussin and to abolish the Sedition Act under which the Muslim preacher had been charged and convicted.

They also asked the Attorney-General’s Chambers to explain why Wan Ji’s jail term had been extended from nine months to a year.

“This clearly goes against the core principles of the PH government regarding this act,” they said in a statement signed by PPBM Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, DAP Youth chief Howard Lee, PKR Youth chief Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir and Amanah Youth chief Mohd Sany Hamzan.

This comes after the High Court rejected the preacher’s appeal against his conviction for a charge of making seditious remarks against the sultan of Selangor seven years ago.

Wan Ji had reportedly questioned the status of the sultan as the head of religion in a Facebook posting.

The PH Youth leaders also reiterated their commitment to promises made in the PH manifesto to abolish all draconian laws, including the Sedition Act, to preserve the freedom of speech.

“We urge the federal government to expedite the abolition of the Sedition Act to ensure this violation of rights does not repeat itself,” they said.
