KUCHING:
The death of a teacher who gave additional lessons at school in Sibu was not work-related, a family member said.

Yap Hue Ling, 47, died yesterday morning after she fell unconscious early this week.

Her brother-in-law Oscar Ling, who is also the Sibu MP, said doctors suspected that she had an aneurysm, which usually has no symptoms, although she did not have any health issues previously.

Ling said Yap, who taught Mandarin at SMK Doshen, had willingly organised additional classes for her students.

“She had been a teacher for more than 20 years and loved her job. She was a dedicated and responsible teacher and was well-liked by most of her students and colleagues,” he said.

Education Minister Maszlee Malik also expressed sadness over Yap’s death.

“I am deeply pained and words are of no help in expressing the sorrow I feel at this moment. Thank you Cikgu Yap,” he said on Twitter.

Yap leaves her husband and three children – two boys, aged 16 and 12, and a girl aged 10.

Her funeral service will be held at 8.30am tomorrow.

Ling said the family has agreed to donate her organs.

Earlier, on a separate matter, Maszlee said schools should not be organising any activities during the ongoing mid-year break.

He said the break was meant for students and teachers to rest and spend time with their loved ones.

“Use the long holiday to prepare for a meaningful celebration,” he said.
