KUALA LUMPUR:
A private college student was sentenced to three months jail and fined RM5,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here today for ramming his car into a traffic policeman on duty two days ago.

Magistrate M Saravanan meted out the punishment to Tan Wooi Zhan, 25, after he pleaded guilty to the charge read out to him.

The court also ordered Tan to serve another three months in jail if he failed to pay the fine, and to have his driving licence suspended for three years, effective today.

The accused paid the fine.

According to the charge sheet, Tan was accused of driving his Mercedes Benz car recklessly and dangerously, causing injuries to Constable Mohamad Aniq Ariz Mohd Kassim, 22, who was on duty to control the traffic flow at the traffic light intersection at Jalan Hishamuddin-Jalan Raja Laut near here, at 8am, on April 2.

He was charged under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum penalty of five years’ jail and a RM15,000 fine, as well as suspension of the driving licence, upon conviction.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Muhamad Zuraidi Zulkifli pressed for just sentence to serve as a lesson after taking into account that the accused had failed to control his vehicle on a busy road.

Tan, who was not represented, appealed for leniency. He said he regretted his action and promised not to repeat the same mistake.
