In a statement, EC chairman Azhar Harun said the voting ballot in the picture was issued to postal voters on Jan 13.
“The EC would like to stress that the act of spreading the picture of the ballot is an offence.
“Allegations by some parties that EC has released the ballots before voting day are slanderous and ill-intended.”
Azhar said EC had lodged a police report on the matter and will also be bringing the matter to the attention of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
“We would like to remind all voters and parties to protect the secrecy of their vote and not show their ballots of any election to the public, be it in social media or elsewhere, as this is an offence under the Election Act 1954,” he said, adding it was an offence punishable under the law.
The early voting for the Cameron Highlands by-election will take place on Jan 22 and will be followed by polling on Jan 26.
