Minor quake felt near Mt Kinabalu in Ranau

The Fire and Rescue Services Department says it did not receive any emergency calls and the situation in the hiking area is under control.

KOTA KINABALU:
A minor earthquake, measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale, struck Kundasang in Ranau at 2.15pm today.

According to the Malaysian Meteorological Services Department website, the quake occurred 11km northeast of Ranau.

Ranau fire and rescue services station chief Jimmy Lagung said the tremors were only felt in the Mount Kinabalu vicinity.

He said they did not receive any emergency calls and the Mountain Search and Rescue (Mosar) team informed them that the situation at the hiking area was under control.

Lagung said this was the first tremor recorded this year since the 2015 earthquake in the area which claimed 18 lives.
