PETALING JAYA:
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has made it to the top 20 list for On-Time Performance (OTP) among “mega airports” in a survey by the world’s leading provider of travel data and insight.

It joined the likes of Tokyo Haneda and Changi Airport in the rankings by UK-based air travel intelligence company OAG for 2018.

Scores are given based on flights that arrive or depart within 15 minutes of their scheduled arrival/departure times, OAG said in its Punctuality League 2019 report released today.

Airports are ranked in the categories of small, medium, large, major and mega based on the total number of airline seats.

The report said the survey took into account data from 57 million flights from global airline schedule databases between January and December.

KLIA earned a score of 70.41%.

Tokyo Haneda airport was ranked first, followed by Atlanta Airport and Changi.

Others include the Denver, Los Angeles, Madrid, Dallas/Fort Worth, Amsterdam, Bangkok, Chicago O’Hare, Istanbul’s Ataturk, New York’s JFK, Delhi, San Francisco, London’s Heathrow, Beijing, Munich, Hong Kong and Frankfurt airports.

They are listed as “mega airports” for seeing 30 million departing seats yearly.

KLIA was ranked No. 18 in the list for “large airports” in 2014.

In 2017, it was ranked 12th in a separate report by the OAG – the International Megahubs Index Top 20 list of most connected airports worldwide.

Among the top 20 low-cost carriers for OTP in the 2018 list are Thai AirAsia and AirAsia India, ranked 8th and 12th respectively.
