The Magistrate’s Court today allowed an application for his remand, following his arrest yesterday over the provocative speech, in which he allegedly threatened to attack a police station.
Azwanddin, who heads the right-wing group Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM), appeared at the court today handcuffed.
He is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, based on eight police reports including one made by a Klang district police officer.
In his speech on Tuesday, he attacked the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, P Waytha Moorthy using a derogatory reference for ethic Indians.
Azwanddin and several Malay leaders have blamed Waytha for the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Kassim, who was allegedly assaulted by a mob during violent protests outside the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya last month.
His lawyer Mohd Imran Tamrin said Azwanddin’s speech could be open to interpretations.
Imran also urged “other parties” to be investigated.
“Don’t focus on Azwandddin alone, but focus on other parties who are still free out there,” he said, in an apparent reference to calls from right-wing groups for Waytha to be arrested.
