Teresa gets bankruptcy order against former JMM leader

DAP MP took ex-Malay rights group leader Azwanddin Hamzah to court for failing to honour out-of-court settlement over temple defamation issue.

DAP MP Teresa Kok said the bankruptcy order against Azwanddin Hamzah was granted by the Shah Alam High Court on March 29.
PETALING JAYA:
Seputeh MP Teresa Kok has obtained a bankruptcy order against a former leader of a Malay rights group for failing to honour an out-of-court settlement.

Kok said the bankruptcy order against Azwanddin Hamzah was granted by the Shah Alam High Court on March 29.

The order stated that Azwanddin had not come forward to contest the bankruptcy proceedings against him.

“The director-general of the Insolvency Department will take over and manage the debtor’s (Azwanddin) assets,” the order said.

The court also instructed Azwanddin, who is the former Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) president, to appear before the department in Kuala Lumpur after the order is served on him.

Kok filed a lawsuit against Azwanddin in 2019 over claims he made at a gathering for the late fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim that she was involved in a land dispute concerning the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple.

She said she was never involved in the temple riots that took place in November 2018 and that Azwanddin’s statement was “clearly motivated by bad motive and malicious intentions”.

They settled the lawsuit in July the same year, where Azwanddin was supposed to pay an undisclosed sum of money as part of the settlement and publish an apology in three newspapers – The Star, Sin Chew Daily and Sinar Harian.

Kok said Azwanddin had not honoured the consent judgment and failed to make any payment of the settlement sum, prompting her to initiate bankruptcy proceedings against him.
