Anwar: Majority of Malaysians abhor violence

He says racial and religious matters can easily trigger unrest and conflict and he hopes the Seafield temple issue can be resolved peacefully.

Anwar Ibrahim says people often follow sentiments without analysing the facts.
KUALA LUMPUR:
PKR president Anwar Ibrahim says the majority of Malaysians don’t condone violent acts.

Commenting on the recent violence seen in the relocation of the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Seafield, Subang Jaya, he said racial and religious matters could easily trigger unrest and conflict.

“People follow sentiments without analysing the facts.

“That’s why we need to emphasise on resolving this temple dispute through peaceful discussions,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby.

The relocation of the temple had seen two nights of violence on Monday and Tuesday, which saw several people, including a fireman, being injured and more than 20 vehicles torched. Police have detained 21 people for investigations.

Meanwhile, asked on the full line-up for PKR’s top leadership, including appointed positions, Anwar said this will be revealed before the end of 2018.

He said the decision on these positions need not be rushed.

“Its not a problem. No urgency. No need to rush as we need to take into account all opinions.”

On Tuesday, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the 24 remaining vacant posts in PKR will be announced after Anwar consults the respective state leaders.

He said the party’s constitution allows the president to appoint five central leadership council members, two vice-presidents, a secretary-general, an information chief, a treasurer and 14 state chairmen.
