GEORGE TOWN:
Umno’s Guar Chempedak assemblyman Ku Abdul Rahman Ku Ismail has informed the Kedah state assembly of his resignation from the party and his intention to stand as an independent beginning today.

In the assembly session this morning, speaker Ahmad Kasim said he had received a letter from Rahman on the matter yesterday although no reasons were given.

Rahman was one of three Barisan Nasional reps in the 36-member assembly. The other two are Sungai Tiang’s Suraya Yaacob and Bandar Baharu’s Norsabrina Mohd Noor.

When contacted, Suraya and Norsabrina told FMT they would “stay on” but declined to comment further.

Pakatan Harapan won 18 seats in the May 9 polls, just one short of the 19 needed for a simple majority in the state assembly.

PAS meanwhile holds 15 seats.

FMT has contacted Rahman for comment.
