PETALING JAYA:
Najib Razak today said he never discounted 1MDB’s impact on Barisan Nasional (BN) after two former ministers seemingly disagreed with his reasons for the coalition’s defeat in the May 9 polls.

“I never said 1MDB wasn’t a factor in BN’s loss,” the former prime minister said on Facebook.

Najib said this following remarks by former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and BN secretary-general Nazri Aziz where they blamed the scandal-plagued investment fund for the coalition’s poor performance in the general election.

Khairy, the former youth and sports minister said on Twitter: “We lost because of 1MDB. The end.”

Khairy had shared a news report from an English daily which quoted Najib as saying that BN lost because of “fraud, defamation and false promises made by Pakatan Harapan” on the micro-blogging site.

Najib had apparently said this during a session with his social media followers yesterday.

This morning, Nazri, who is the former culture and tourism minister, said he agreed with Khairy.

He said the Cabinet only knew about all the decisions pertaining to 1MDB after the issue exploded in the media.

Najib, however, said both Khairy and Nazri had based their reactions on a news report which he described as “inaccurate and mischievous”.

He said that Nazri and Khairy would have had a clearer picture of what he meant by false propaganda and lies made about the investment arm if they had attended the session with his social media followers.

Najib also said that if he really believed that there was nothing wrong with 1MDB, he would not have directed the Public Accounts Committee, which comprised members from both sides of the divide, to investigate it.

The Pekan MP went on to say that he did not want to point the fingers at anyone but he believed that everyone was responsible for BN’s loss.

“I bore the responsibility and resigned from all posts as well as I refrained from contesting for positions in the party,” he added.
