Phantom voters: MACC arrests PKR division chief

This follows a complaint by Julau PKR on a tremendous increase in membership in the branch.

MACC was asked to probe the sudden increase in membership at Julau PKR branch in Sarawak from 603 on June 26 to 13,000 a day later.
PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed the arrest of a PKR division chief on the issue of the sharp rise in phantom voters in the Julau PKR branch in Sarawak.

A highly-placed MACC source told FMT today that the arrest was made in Kuala Lumpur yesterday at 9pm.

“He is in the Kuala Lumpur PKR central leadership council.

“He is being investigated in connection with a Julau PKR member’s complaint,” the source said.

The MACC source said it had received a one-day remand order from the court to detain the individual.

On Oct 25, Sarawak PKR information chief Vernon Kedit lodged a report with the MACC, urging the agency to probe possible dubious registrations of Julau PKR members.

This followed Kedit’s statutory declaration that the Julau PKR branch membership had surged from 603 on June 26 to a staggering 13,000 a day later.

Sarawak PKR secretary Nicholas Bawin had said they were left with no choice but to bring the matter to the attention of MACC as their grouses were ignored by the party.

“PKR party secretary-general (Saifuddin Nasution Ismail) issued a press statement yesterday that all membership lists had been finalised and our complaints had exceeded the time period for objections,” he said.

Saifuddin had passed the matter back to PKR vice-president Xavier Jayakumar, saying it is under his purview.

When contacted by FMT today, Xavier said: “I’ve already said that it never came to my table.”

PKR members in Sarawak will be the last to go to the polls. The ongoing e-voting party elections will take place on Nov 10.
