KUALA LUMPUR:
The law firm representing a Port Dickson voter who questioned Anwar Ibrahim’s eligibility to stand in the recent by-election has discharged itself from further representing her in the suit.

Anwar’s lawyer, J Leela, said a representative from the firm, Raja Riza Associates, had informed High Court judge Azizah Nawawi that the company was opting out from representing Noraziah Mohd Shariff.

“The reason cited was that they could not get any instructions from her on the case,” Leela said after meeting Azizah for case mention today.

She said the court would hear Anwar’s bid to strike out the suit on Nov 8.

Noraziah filed the suit on Sept 28, seeking a declaration that Anwar could not contest in the Port Dickson by-election on Oct 13 as the royal pardon granted to him was unconstitutional.

She also sought a declaration that the pardon granted to Anwar was null and void as the Pardons Board was not formed in accordance with Article 42 (5) of the Federal Constitution.

The Pardons Board, who was named in the suit, meanwhile challenged the case on grounds that she should have brought a petition to question Anwar’s status in an election court.

Anwar won the by-election with a 23,560-majority in a seven-way fight, beating PAS’ Mohd Nazari Mokhtar, former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Isa Samad, Stevie Chan, Lau Seck Yan, Kan Chee Yuen and Anwar’s former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, who contested as independents.

He was sworn in as Port Dickson MP in the current Dewan Rakyat sitting.
