Bigger margin for me if no missing votes, says Azmin

The PKR deputy president wants the party's election committee to explain hundreds of missing votes in Ampang and Gombak.

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali has demanded the party’s election committee to explain hundreds of votes which he said went missing during the ongoing e-voting process.

“Look at what happened in Selangor with votes going missing. In Ampang alone, 1,100 votes were missing, and in my own division (of Gombak), 800 votes were missing,” Azmin, who is the economic affairs minister, said today when met on the sidelines of an anti-corruption summit here.

Unofficial results showed that Azmin, who is locked in a close battle for the deputy president’s post with Rafizi Ramli, got more votes than his rival in Selangor.

But Rafizi is said to be leading by a slim 1.1% margin in the nationwide tally, with a difference of 995 votes.

Azmin today said he was confident of a bigger margin if “votes are counted in an open manner”.

“Certainly, my margin will be much bigger than what I have secured at present, but let them decide and investigate,” he said.

The PKR voting process has been fraught with problems of overcrowding at polling centres and technical glitches since it started last month.

Azmin said adequate facilities must be provided to ensure a smooth voting process.

He said the election committee must not succumb to pressure from party leaders, adding that complaints by members must be investigated.

Asked about the close fight between him and Rafizi, Azmin said he remains confident of victory.

“I believe in the wisdom of the party members. For two decades, they have seen me in action and I believe they will continue to support my leadership to strengthen the party and its future,” he said.
