Sabah DCM wants special incentives for Bible subject in schools

Madius Tangau says there has been an increase in students sitting for the Bible Knowledge paper for SPM.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Madius Tangau has urged the government to provide special incentives to students especially in Sabah and Sarawak who want to take up Bible knowledge subjects.

Tangau, who is also the president of United Pasok Momogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko), said the subject had benefited students before it was suspended, and later taught outside of normal school hours.

“At the moment, only Upko is helping these students as much as we could by providing textbooks to the students.

“We hope the government will also take an initiative, starting in Sabah and Sarawak perhaps, so that all students who want to take the subject could do so,” said Tangau.

Tangau said there was an increase of students sitting for the Bible Knowledge subject in their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, but added that its teaching and learning had not been smooth.

“I feel it is time for the government to give more support, perhaps special incentives, for those who want to learn Bible knowledge,” he said, adding that many schools had introduced the subject at Form One.

Tangau said this when asked to comment on his question to the education ministry on the status of Bible lessons.

Education Minister Maszlee Malik has said that the Education Act 1996 stipulates that religions other than Islam can only be taught as long as it is not paid for by the government, and with permission from their parents to take the subject.

According to a circular in 2011, Bible Knowledge can be taught outside of the normal school hours.
