
He also said the prime minister would not hold any other post.
In his mid-term review speech on the 11th Malaysian Plan in the Dewan Rakyat today, Mahathir said new laws will be introduced to oversee political financing as well as strengthen the electoral process, including lowering the voting age to 18.
“The list of voters will be cleaned up and postal voting will be enhanced,” he added.
Mahathir said Parliament would be given greater autonomy under the Parliament Services Act 1963, with select committees to look into the appointments in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Auditor-General’s Department.
“MACC and Election Commission will also be directly under these committees.”
He said MACC would be made independent and an Ombudsman agency created to address public complaints.
Mahathir also said there would be greater separation of powers between the attorney-general and deputy public prosecutors.
He said a special team would be set up to evaluate the role and functions of state-owned companies.
The mid-term review of the 11th Malaysia Plan (2016 to 2020), which highlights new and existing policies, will be debated for two weeks in the Dewan Rakyat.
The plan centres on the development of infrastructure and is the last batch of a series of five-year plans which started in 1966.
