PETALING JAYA:
Pressure is growing on PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution and the party’s election committee to take responsibility over problems with its e-voting system, which had led to brawls at polling centres in Penang and Kedah yesterday.

The deputy chief of PKR women’s wing Haniza Talha said Saifuddin failed to heed warnings on the weaknesses of the e-voting system.

“What we feared has happened, and the election committee wasn’t prepared at all to the extent that polling in several states were called off,” she said.

“The election committee must be replaced by an independent body like Bersih 2.0 to carry out the party elections this time.”

Haniza, the Taman Medan assemblyman, also accused Saifuddin of not showing his neutrality as a secretary-general.

“Wanita PKR demands the top leadership make a decision as soon as possible to fix the failures of the voting process, so that we can have a clean and transparent election.”

Her call echoes that of PKR Youth chief candidate Dr Afif Bahardin, who urged Saifuddin to respond to complaints on the e-voting system.

“He must answer what went wrong with the election.

“It is clearly inefficient and has caused a lot of people to doubt the results,” Afif said yesterday during a press conference which turned rowdy following a heated argument between two factions.

In the incident, several chairs were thrown, and at least one person was hurt, leading to an angry response from party supremo Anwar Ibrahim.

“They think this is MIC… wrong party. MIC is famous for throwing chairs, so with MIC no more now, they’re the ones replacing to throw chairs,” he said in Kota Kinabalu today.

Party polls have been put on hold till Sept 30 to resolve technical issues related to its e-voting system.

Yesterday, Nibong Tebal PKR member S Sanjay, a candidate for the division leader’s post, complained about flaws in the system.

A similar complaint over irregularities had led to a fracas in the Merbok PKR division in Kedah, forcing polling in eight of the 15 divisions in the state to be suspended.
