GEORGE TOWN:
Pandemonium broke out at a press conference called by PKR in Seberang Jaya to give an update on its fractious party elections tonight, after a heated argument among members quickly turned into punches and chair-throwing.

A group of PKR members were upset when the party officials announced that the election results in Penang would stand despite complaints on alleged irregularities in its e-voting system.

At the press conference tonight, PKR’s Central Election Committee secretary Ismail Yusof said only the election results in Kedah would be declared null and void, followed by shouts of “Bantah” (object) by some of those present.

As the press conference ended, a shouting match ensued between two groups.

Soon after, punches were thrown and chairs flew, while at least one person was injured on his head.

PKR Youth deputy chief Dr Afif Bahardin, who later entered the function hall in Safira Club, Seberang Jaya, had a hard time trying to calm down the situation.

Speaking to reporters, Afif said party secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail must respond to complaints on the e-voting system.

“We will take it up with the secretary-general. He must answer what went wrong with the election. I want to invite all members here to ask for a review of the e-voting system.

“It is clearly inefficient and has caused a lot of people to doubt the results,” said Afif, who is gunning for the PKR Youth chief post.
