KUALA LUMPUR:
Lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah posted his remaining bail of RM500,000 for his four money laundering charges at the Sessions Court here today.

His son, Farhan, and two others posted bail for him at 1.30pm.

One of them said the bail money had come from Shafee’s family and friends. However, Shafee himself was not present at the court registry to settle the bail.

Last week, the lawyer was slapped with four money laundering charges for allegedly receiving RM9.5 million from former prime minister Najib Razak.

He was accused of receiving the money between August 2013 and January 2014.

He was also charged with making false declarations to the Inland Revenue Board for the same RM9.5 million between March and June 2015.

If convicted under Section 4 (1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act, Shafee faces a maximum jail sentence of 15 years for receiving the RM9.5 million and making false tax returns.

The court set bail at RM1 million for all four charges, half of which Shafee paid last week.

It also ordered him to surrender his passports.

The money laundering charges came after an officer from the Attorney-General’s Chambers affirmed an affidavit saying Shafee had received RM9.5 million from Najib to lead the prosecution in the Sodomy 2 case.

Shafee was given a temporary licence to be made ad-hoc prosecutor to conduct the government’s Sodomy 2 appeal which led the appeals court to convict Anwar Ibrahim in 2014.

He denied that the RM9.5 million was payment for prosecuting Anwar, claiming it was for representing Barisan Nasional in election petition cases.
