KUALA LUMPUR: The Prime Minister’s Department says the Official Secrets Act 1972 (Act 88) or OSA is being reviewed by the office of the chief security officer and other relevant agencies and is expected to be presented to Parliament soon.

In a written reply to Ahmad Faizal Azumu (PH-Tambun) at the Dewan Rakyat today, it said the review and amendments involved curbing cyber attacks.

“The proposed amendments to Act 88 will be presented to Parliament after receiving Cabinet approval,” it said.

Faizal had asked if the government planned to amend the OSA to ensure that it was not misused and that only official government secrets were protected.

Section 3 of the OSA already has a provision for life imprisonment for espionage agents.

The Dewan Rakyat was earlier informed that no one had been convicted under the act since its enforcement in 1984.
