PETALING JAYA:
Youth activist Asheeq Ali Sethi Alivi has been summoned by Bukit Aman under the Sedition Act 1948 over his speech at a rally last month which allegedly insulted Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V.

Asheeq said three police officers from Bukit Aman visited him today, ordering him to come to Bukit Aman headquarters at 2pm tomorrow.

“They came to my house today around noon, with a notice summoning me to Bukit Aman at 2pm tomorrow.

“It is a bit complicated as the matter has been taken up by Bukit Aman. I don’t know why they came to my house today without notice.

“The report was lodged a day after my video went viral but they are calling me a month later. There are a lot of doubts,” he told FMT, referring to his speech which was delivered during last month’s solidarity rally for lawyer-cum-activist Fadiah Nadwa Fikri outside the Brickfields police station.

Asheeq said he was unsure which part of his speech was deemed to have insulted the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Besides Asheeq, some 50 activists from various organisations, including Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), Suaram and the Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4), also gathered to show solidarity for Fadiah Nadwa.

Fadiah was called in by the police on July 11 for investigations under the Sedition Act because of her blog post which made a reference to PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim’s meeting with Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, where Anwar had kissed the ruler’s hand.

Her comments led to a backlash from Malay rights group Perkasa, which urged police to probe her for sedition for trying to incite hatred towards the Malay rulers.

Fadiah tweeted her support for Asheeq, saying the probe against him was preposterous.

“Student activist Asheeq Ali has been called in for questioning under the Sedition Act for giving a solidarity speech while I was being questioned under the Sedition Act at IPD Brickfields last month,” she said on Twitter.
