Works Minister Baru Bian said a review will be conducted to decide which toll booth should be demolished first.
“There are suggestions to remove toll collection in stages so as not to cause any implications to the country’s financial condition. We also need to look at the needs of investors and shareholders,” he said during the ministry’s wrap up at the Dewan Rakyat today.
Baru said all related matters and their implications would be discussed with the finance ministry, the economic affairs ministry and the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
He said, based on previous statements, the overall takeover cost was estimated around RM400 billion and this would create an impact on the country’s financial situation if the tolls were abolished simultaneously.
Earlier, Ahmad Maslan (BN-Pontian) said the previous government had abolished four tolls – Batu Tiga in Shah Alam, Sungai Rasau in Selangor, Bukit Kayu Hitam in Kedah and the Eastern Dispersal Link in Johor.
Ahmad also asked for the list of toll booths that are to be demolished in stages.
Khairy Jamaluddin (BN-Rembau) then asked if the government would approve of any new toll concessionaires to which Baru said: “If there are new ones, I give my assurance they would not be approved.”
Pakatan Harapan promised to remove toll collection as part of its GE14 manifesto.
