KUALA LUMPUR:
A police officer who was accused of being involved in the disappearance of Perlis activist Amri Che Mat today brought a copy of the Quran, saying he was ready to take a religious oath to deny the claim by Amri’s wife, Norhayati Ariffin.

“This is my right as I have been accused by Norhayati of doing such a thing,” Mohd Shamzaini Mohd Daud of Perlis police told the Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) inquiry into Amri’s disappearance.

However, upon seeing Shamzaini about to take out his Quran, a lawyer representing Norhayati’s family, Razlan Hadri prevented him from doing so.

Razlan said the inquiry was not the appropriate place for Shamzani to deny the allegation by using the Quran.

Inquiry chairman Mah Weng Kwai agreed with Razlan, saying Shamzaini had already taken his oath in the morning.

Earlier, he was questioned by one of the lawyers representing Norhayati’s family, Jerald Gomez, who asked him about a meeting with Norhayati on May 12 this year.

Norhayati had said Shamzaini visited her house saying the police were involved in her husband’s abduction, a claim Shamzani has denied.

Shamzaini also said he had asked Norhayati to lodge a police report if she had any information about the matter.

Norhayati said she was told by Shamzaini that her husband was picked up by police from Bukit Aman, before he was beaten and his car windscreen smashed.

Amri went missing on Nov 24, 2016.

His wife previously said that five vehicles had blocked his car before he was whisked away, some 500m from their home in Bukit Chabang, Perlis.
