
Speaking to reporters at Parliament, he said this was because they had to be made before the SST takes effect in September.
When asked about the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma), Liew said it was up to the home ministry to come up with a new memorandum.
“Sosma is under the home ministry, so they have to take ownership.
“They have to come up with the memorandum,” he said, adding that abolishing the act would be “quite easy” as it did not involve costing from the Treasury like the Anti-Fake News Act 2018.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the government would abolish Sosma, a controversial law passed in 2012 which was widely seen as a replacement for the Internal Security Act, repealed some three months earlier.
When asked about the abolishment of the Anti-Fake News Act, Liew said they were working on tabling the motion during this Parliament sitting.
“I have prepared the memorandum and will be submitting it to the Cabinet for approval.
“I think it’s in line with Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto that the recommendation for now is for the total abolishment of the act,” he said.
