2 MPs made deputy speakers

Mohd Rashid Hasnon and Nga Kor Ming were nominated by the backbenchers.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Two MPs were voted in as deputy speakers of the Dewan Rakyat today.

Former Penang deputy chief minister Mohd Rashid Hasnon, who is PKR’s Batu Pahat MP, and DAP’s Teluk Intan MP Nga Kor Ming were appointed to the post after obtaining the highest number of votes.

Nga got 124 votes while Rashid got 121. They were both proposed by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Another candidate proposed by Barisan Nasional, Beluran MP Ronald Kiandee, got 93 votes.

Former judge Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof was today confirmed as the Dewan Rakyat speaker, as MPs returned to the House for the first time since the change of government following the 14th general election in May.

The Dewan Rakyat will convene for 20 days.
