KUALA LUMPUR:
Businessman S. Vigneswaran has been elected uncontested as the new president of MIC for a three-year term.

Vigneswaran, a former MIC vice-president, is the current president of the Senate.

He was the sole nominee when nominations closed today in the presidential election, the chairman of the MIC presidential election committee, R. Gobalakrishnan, announced.

The MIC leadership position became vacant when former president Dr S. Subramaniam had confirmed that he would not defend the post, after the party and Barisan Nasional suffered a heavy defeat at the May general election.

He said that as MIC was now an opposition party, “we will have a massive change in the party structure to attract the support of the Indian community especially the younger generation. We will pursue the original goal of the struggle for the Indian community.”

At the May general election, MIC won two seats to the Dewan Rakyat through former vice-president M Saravanan in Tapah, and Youth leader C Sivarraajh in Cameron Highlands.
