Chief justice from Sabah doesn’t mean MA63 fulfilled, says SAPP

KOTA KINABALU:
Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Yong Teck Lee has scoffed at the suggestion that the appointment of a Sabahan as chief justice shows the federal government is honouring the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

Speaking to FMT today, Yong said the statement by Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Wilfred Madius Tangau that the federal government had respected MA63 by appointing Richard Malanjum to the post of chief justice only showed that Tangau was clueless about MA63.

“Madius is saying now that MA63 has been honoured by the appointment of a chief justice from Borneo. Then, it means they have an excuse to do no more on MA63. Such pathetic excuses,” he said.

He added that Malanjum’s appointment was due to his qualification and was a good thing regardless of his status as a Sabahan.

However, he said, there was still a long way to go on fulfilling MA63 and restoring Sabah’s rights.

“Having Sabahans appointed to top federal posts is one thing. Fulfilling MA63 like the Borneonisation of the public service, oil and gas, autonomy and many others takes concerted effort.

“We used to have three ambassadors. In the previous federal Cabinet, we had six ministers and the Parliament speaker was a Sabahan.

“Yet we did not see much of MA63 fulfilled,” he said.
