Lawyer Imran Tamrin said the team would consider this option for Jamal pending his trial in the Ampang Magistrate’s Court for allegedly attempting to escape from police custody.
“We are still gathering the facts to bring a motion to the court asking for bail,” he said after paying the RM400 fine for Jamal.
Jamal pleaded guilty earlier today to causing a public nuisance by smashing beer bottles in front of the Selangor state secretariat building last year.
He had been in custody since last Thursday when the Magistrate’s Court denied him bail after he was charged under Section 224 of the Penal Code for allegedly attempting to escape from police custody.
The court denied him bail on grounds that he might skip bail again, despite Jamal promising to check in at the police station every day as part of his bail requirement.
Jamal was deported back to Malaysia after nearly two months of hiding out in Indonesia.
Imran, who is also the legal adviser for Sungai Besar Umno, said the RM400 fine on Jamal would not affect his position as division chief.
“He is still the leader. Registrar of Societies provisions only disqualify those who are fined over RM2,000 by the court from holding public office.”
He added that he would leave it to Umno’s top leadership on whether to take action against Jamal.
