KUALA LUMPUR:
The Pakatan Harapan government must be given time to prove it can do a good job, says former second finance minister Johari Abdul Ghani.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah press conference today, Johari said each government had different priorities.

He said this when asked to comment on reports that the Philippines’ commercial giant San Miguel may buy state-owned assets in Malaysia as Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad sought to trim the country’s debts.

Mahathir had said last month that Malaysia’s debts were estimated to be equivalent to 65% of the GDP, higher than the 50.8% level at end-2017 claimed by his predecessor, Najib Razak.

“We need to respect each government. When we were in power, the people respected our decision-making. When there were mistakes, we addressed them separately.

“The people have voted for Pakatan Harapan,” he said and so, PH must be given time to prove they can do a good job. “Whether we are the government or the opposition, the end goal is the best interests of the people.”

On the upcoming Umno elections, Johari, the former Titiwangsa MP stressed that the party polls were not a fight between camps.

Johari spoke after attending Tengku Razaleigh’s press conference where the Gua Musang MP announced his candidacy for the Umno presidency.

Johari said his attendance there was because he was invited to attend and he was the division chief in the area

“I want to stress again this is a competition between siblings. Whoever wins, we will support them. We don’t want splits in the party.”

Nominations for the party elections close tomorrow, with voting taking place on June 30. The elections are the first in almost three years after the party successfully obtained extensions for its elections.
