The speaker and deputy speaker of the legislature would be elected at the July 4 meeting, and Mukhriz said the candidates were from PKR and PPBM respectively.
He hoped that the opposition, comprising PAS and Barisan Nasional, would accept Pakatan Harapan’s choices.
Pakatan Harapan won 18 seats in the assembly, one short of a majority in the 36-member house. The coalition’s seats are from PKR (7), PPBM (5), Amanah (4) and DAP (2)
PAS has 15 seats and Barisan National 3, all from Umno.
Mukhriz said he was confident that fresh elections to the assembly could be avoided.
“I don’t think anyone, whether Kedahans or the political parties, are in favour of another state election.
“I’m confident that we can resolve this by picking a speaker on July 4 when the state assembly convenes,” Mukhriz said today at the federal government’s Hari Raya open house at the residence of the prime minister.
