The petition was filed by his lawyer Yeo Yang Poh at about 10.30am.
It named MCA deputy president and Ayer Hitam MP Wee Ka Siong as the first respondent. Ayer Hitam returning officer Mohd Hafiz Aliman and the Election Commission (EC) are the second and third respondents respectively.
In the May 9 polls, Liew lost the race by a narrow 303-vote margin which allowed Wee to retain the parliamentary seat for Barisan Nasional (BN) with 17,076 votes. Another contestant, PAS candidate, Mardi Marwan, received 4,975 votes.
Yeo said after studying the matter, he and Liew found that there were sufficient grounds for filing the petition and that there were some rules and laws violated during the campaign for GE14 in the Ayer Hitam constituency.
“The focus is more on the conduct of the election during the entire campaign period and not just what happened on the polling day,” he said.
“This process I think will help us and the country as a whole to see how we can move forward for future elections.
“Through this petition, we hope that the court will give its opinion which can then guide how future elections may be conducted,” said Yeo, who was accompanied by Liew, after filing the petition.
Also present were Yong Peng assemblyman Chew Peck Choo and Johor DAP secretary Gan Peck Cheng.
