KUALA LUMPUR:
Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin has said state governments could be in the way of realising municipal elections, part of Pakatan Harapan’s election manifesto.

“I can propose for local council elections but it is up to the state governments whether they want to do it or not,” she told reporters today.

But she said the government was sticking by its three-year deadline to revive local council elections.

Previously, the Federal Court ruled that the DAP-led Penang government did not have the jurisdiction to conduct local government elections.

The court said Penang could not be exempted from Section 15 of the Local Government Act 1976, which abolishes the rights of the state legislatures to hold local government elections.
