TOKYO:
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said Muhammad Ibrahim’s successor as Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) governor had been identified, and that the appointment would be made soon.

“Although we’ve identified the person, we cannot name the person until we have obtained the approval of the king (Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V).

“Until then, we will not be able to announce the name,” he said at a dialogue with journalists at the Japan National Press Club here.

This followed reports that the government had accepted Muhammad’s resignation as BNM governor effective June 6.

Muhammad assumed office on May 1, 2016, succeeding Zeti Akhtar Aziz. He was the eight governor of BNM.

BNM courted controversy after reports of a RM2 billion land purchase said to be linked to 1MDB.
