Hannah Yeoh: PH needs time to fulfil pledges on KL issues

PETALING JAYA:
Incoming Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh says although the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government is committed to fulfilling its pledges on resolving urban issues in Kuala Lumpur, it will take time to do so.

The former Selangor speaker said while there were many aspects to be looked into, the delay was largely due to the Federal Territories (FT) minister’s position being vacant since the last general election.

She said “80% to 90%” of the complaints received on Kuala Lumpur City Hall were related to over-development.

“We have met with DBKL but they won’t move until they hear from the FT minister,” she said after meeting with the Save Kuala Lumpur (SKL) coalition of residents’ associations at Pusat Komuniti Bukit Bandaraya here today.

“We do not know if there will be an FT minister because the Cabinet (appointments) is not complete yet… We are all waiting.”

She said PH MPs of constituencies in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur discussed the pending issues with SKL at the meeting, adding that the problems would take time to resolve but there was no timeframe yet.

“We all know that this is something we have committed to. So we are not running away from the pledges, but we obviously need time to progress on them all,” she said.

Also present were incoming Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil, Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng and Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

SKL vice-chairman M Ali said the group was ready to work with the government for the benefit of the city, adding that residents’ expectations for results were high.

“The KL MPs have to move fast. It should all be done in six months, because we cannot wait for six months to study and then another six months to sort things out,” he said.

He said the necessary studies and the gazetting of the KL City Plan needed to be done in the next three months to avoid “any more damage in the city”.

Ali also said the authorities should stop issuing development approvals until the KL City Plan is gazetted.

He said although some objectionable projects had already begun, those that had not yet started should be put on hold.

He added that a suggestion by Fahmi for a working group comprising KL MPs, SKL members and relevant professional bodies to come out with a document on the city was something to be pursued.

On June 2, incoming Seputeh MP Teresa Kok had called for the Prime Minister’s Department to take care of FT affairs rather than have a separate minister handling them.

She alleged that project contracts were pushed through under the FT minister in the former Barisan Nasional government just because he wanted them to be approved.
