The meeting comes ahead of a Rulers’ Conference meeting on the issue tomorrow, after the Pakatan Harapan government’s decision to only nominate prominent lawyer Tommy Thomas as the next AG to replace current AG Apandi Ali.
PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that Anwar was now at Istana Negara and that prior to tonight, Anwar had already met with seven Malay rulers on the appointment of a non-Muslim AG.
It was previously reported that Tommy, a lawyer with 30 years of experience under his belt and a constitutional law expert, was Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s sole nominee for the AG role.
However, the palace was reported to be against the nomination and insisted on a Muslim Malay to fill the post and Mahathir said the government would strive to resolve the issue according to the provisions of the Federal Constitution.
Meanwhile, sources said an announcement on the matter is expected tomorrow.
