ALOR SETAR:
Dr Mahathir Mohamad, in his first visit to his home state capital since becoming prime minister again, made a surprise visit to Pekan Rabu shopping centre, now housed in a new building opened last month.

“Many entrepreneurs but selling the same items,” he remarked, after spending almost one-and-a-half-hours at the complex.

“I notice there are more traders but the problem is that they are selling the same items…we enter one shop, we can buy everything we want, there is no need to go to the other shops,” he told reporters briefly after making his visit. Dr Mahathir is known to visit Pekan Rabu during the month of Ramadan every year.

He bought several items such as the ‘songkok’, skull cap, prayer mat and raya cakes. One stall sells ‘Songkok Style Tun’ which has been his favourite.

The new Pekan Rabu Complex, with 355 business spaces, was built at a cost of RM55.57 million and occupies 5,062 square metres.

Dr Mahathir was accompanied by his wife, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, and son Mukhriz, who is menteri besar of Kedah, and Mukhriz’s wife, Norzieta Zakaria.
