Rude immigration officer who smacked foreigner on head suspended

Immigration director-general Mustafar Ali says officer who smacked head of Myanmar will face disciplinary action after video of incident becomes viral on social media.

The Immigration Department has suspended a frontline officer with immediate effect, following a video showing the civil servant allegedly smacking a foreigner on the head.

The video has been making its rounds on social media today.

Its director-general, Mustafar Ali, said the officer might also face disciplinary action, including dismissal.

“Severe action will be taken, including sacking the officer.

“The department will not compromise with any staff members who violate the integrity as well as smear the good name of the department. We will not protect them,” he said.

The incident, involving a man believed to be a Myanmar, was believed to have occurred at the immigration office in Wisma Persekutuan Johor Bahru this morning.

Mustafar said the officer’s behaviour had clearly tarnished the image of the department and was against its code of ethics.

The officer could be subjected to disciplinary action under the Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) (Amendment) 2002, he added.
