Nobel Prize nomination? I’m not so noble, quips Mahathir

The prime minister cheekily brushes off petition suggesting he be nominated for the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize.

PETALING JAYA:
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today spoke to the press at the PPBM headquarters on several issues, including the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore high speed rail deal and bonuses for civil servants.

On suggestions he be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I am not so noble.

On whether the National Civics Bureau (BTN) should be abolished

Maybe we will keep or maybe we will abolish. Many of these institutions were set up for the Barisan Nasional, but they used government money to pay salaries.

Bonuses for civil servants for Raya?

There will be, but don’t know how much.

On investigating the Election Commission chairman Hashim Abdullah

I understand he wants to resign. But if there is anything against him, we will follow the law.

On scrapping the high speed rail (HSR) project

I’m told the penalty is 500 million but I’m yet to verify that (ringgit or Singapore dollar).

It is final but it will take time because we have an agreement with Singapore.

The project only shortens the journey by one hour and it’s such a short track. We will discuss this with Singapore.

On Hindraf’s proposal to award land to non-Bumiputeras for a Felda-like scheme

We will consider.
