“They were hired because they have political links, not because they are qualified.

“For example, there are one or two people in my ministry appointed to the board, who do not have specific qualifications, it is because they have things to do with political parties.

“I think this must change, at least give others the chance,” he told reporters today.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the government would axe some 17,000 civil servants who are political appointees, as part of efforts to reduce government expenditure.

Kula said it would be ridiculous if the political appointees decided to stay on.

“After the May 9 election, it is no longer the old government, but the new one,” he said, adding that people with talents should be given priority in the civil service.
